The Washington State Fire & Smoke Damper Examination Certification is intended to ensure that individuals performing inspection, testing, and documentation of fire dampers, smoke dampers, and combination fire/smoke dampers are qualified and knowledgeable in accordance with Washington State law and nationally recognized codes and standards.
This certification verifies a candidate’s ability to:
• Interpret applicable codes and standards
• Conduct damper inspections and testing procedures
• Identify unsafe conditions and deficiencies
• Properly document inspection/test results
• Communicate findings to building owners, AHJs, and facility personnel

To Qualify

2,000 hours of documented field experience related to fire damper, smoke damper, or combination damper inspection/testing, HVAC systems, fire protection systems, mechanical inspection, or related work.


To Recertify

To maintain certification status, certificants must meet recertification requirements prior to expiration.

Continuing Education Requirement

  • 4 CEU hours of approved code update training
